The Guernsey Voluntary Service (GVS), formerly WRVS, has been active in Guernsey and Alderney for more than 60 years. It is involved in:

However the biggest commitment of the GVS is to the elderly in the community:

to this end GVS runs two Day Centres, a Meals on Wheels service and three Darby and Joan Clubs.

We are always looking for more volunteers for our various services and also volunteer drivers.  If you can spare some time on a regular or on an occasional basis please contact us.

DAY CENTRES

The GVS run two Day Centres in Guernsey: the Jubilee Day Centre, Grandes Maisons Road, St Sampsons   and The Russels Day Centre, Les Cotils, St Peter Port. The Jubilee Day Centre is open Monday to Friday and The Russels Tuesday to Friday. Both are open from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

The intention is to provide a comfortable meeting place for the older members of the community, where they can take pleasure in the company of others, enjoy good food and benefit from the facilities that the Centres have to offer. Members must be over the age of 65 and mobile. Members drive themselves or are transported to the Centres by volunteer drivers, family members, or by the Day Centre buses—space permitting. We make a small charge for the day which covers all meals and facilities.

These are Social Clubs for both men and women. Tea is provided as well as entertainment, and they offer an opportunity to meet up and enjoy each other’s company.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Around 30,000 meals are delivered annually by our volunteers. The service operates six days a week throughout the year and meals are delivered to the elderly, sick and disabled in both Guernsey and Alderney.

Referral for Meals on Wheels needs to be through a Family Doctor, the Community Nursing Services or Social Workers. They in turn will contact our Meals on Wheels Office at the Jubilee Day Centre

A small charge is made for each meal.
